Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is considering introducing its next-generation ultra-fast charging technology in Pakistan and is discussing the proposal with Mega Motor Company.
BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang said the company is evaluating the technology as part of its broader expansion plans in Pakistan. Any local rollout will depend on infrastructure readiness and the company’s future vehicle plans.
New Technology Promises Charging in Minutes
BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery works with its new FLASH Charging system, which can deliver up to 1,500kW through a single connector.
According to the company, compatible vehicles can charge their batteries from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. Charging from 10% to 97% can take nine minutes.
BYD also says the system can charge a compatible battery from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at temperatures as low as -30°C.
These figures apply specifically to vehicles equipped with BYD’s new battery and charging platform. They should not be interpreted as charging times for every BYD model currently available in Pakistan.
Infrastructure Readiness Will Be Key
Liu said the introduction of the technology in Pakistan would depend on the readiness of local infrastructure, discussions with relevant stakeholders and the company’s future product plans.
Existing BYD vehicles are expected to remain compatible with future charging infrastructure. However, compatibility does not necessarily mean they will be able to charge at the system’s maximum speed.
Newer Vehicles Needed for Maximum Charging Speeds
To benefit from the highest charging rates, vehicles must be designed around BYD’s newer battery platform.
Installing a higher-powered charger does not automatically mean every electric vehicle will charge faster. Actual charging speeds depend on the vehicle’s battery capacity, electrical architecture and maximum supported charging rate.
Local Vehicle Production Also Planned
BYD is also moving forward with plans to begin local vehicle assembly in Pakistan.
According to Liu, the company’s local assembly plant is targeted to begin operations in the second half of 2026.
The facility is designed to produce approximately 25,000 vehicles annually, with the capacity to expand to 50,000 units per year.
The discussions over a charging network form part of BYD’s wider expansion strategy in Pakistan, as the company considers introducing more electric and electrified vehicles to the local market.
No Confirmed Launch Dates Yet
BYD has not announced a confirmed launch date for its ultra-fast charging network or the start of local vehicle production in Pakistan.
