Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has rejected the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the move as an attack on democracy and said the Government Backtracked Despite Accepting the Demands.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on October 11, 2026, Fazlur Rehman said his party would not accept what he described as an unconstitutional measure. He said the matter would be taken to the public, parliament and the courts.
“We are not prepared to bow before this unconstitutional step,” he said, reiterating his opposition to the federal government’s decision.
Fazlur Rehman Outlines Efforts to Facilitate Talks
Fazlur Rehman said he returned to Pakistan on October 7 after performing Umrah, following which a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) delegation met him.
According to the JUI-F chief, PTI representatives expressed a desire for him to play a role in facilitating negotiations. The following day, the National Assembly speaker and federal ministers also visited him and asked him to help mediate between the government and the opposition party.
He said the meetings took place amid tensions over PTI’s planned long march and the federal government’s proposed emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Disagreement Over PTI Long March
Fazlur Rehman said PTI limited the scope of its long march to the province after meeting him.
He added that the government had postponed its decision on imposing emergency measures at that stage and wanted PTI to announce the cancellation of its long march. PTI, however, wanted permission for its representatives to meet the party’s founder, Imran Khan, he said.
The JUI-F chief said the differences over these demands complicated efforts to reach an agreement between the government and PTI.
Contact With PTI and Government Leaders
Fazlur Rehman said he held a conference call with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, PTI leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Shahram Khan Tarakai to discuss the situation.
According to him, the participants said PTI would end the long march only if its demands were accepted. Fazlur Rehman said he offered to travel to Peshawar to help resolve the dispute.
He added that he visited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif again after morning prayers. The prime minister reportedly told him that the government would try to reach a conclusion after a cabinet meeting.
Fazlur Rehman’s remarks came amid political tensions over the federal government’s decision to impose emergency and governor’s rule in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He reiterated that his party would oppose the move through political and legal channels.
