Government Plans Fast EV Charging Stations Every 50 Kilometers on Major Highways

According to the ministry, the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 envisages the installation of 40 fast-charging stations in the initial phase.

Urdu Report Desk

Pakistan plans to establish around 3,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country by 2030, with charging facilities planned at intervals of approximately 50 kilometers along major highways and motorways.

The Ministry of Industries and Production shared details of the initiative in a written reply to the National Assembly, responding to a question from Member of the National Assembly Malik Shakir Bashir Awan.

40 Fast-Charging Stations in the Initial Phase

According to the ministry, the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 envisages the installation of 40 fast-charging stations in the initial phase.

These stations will be established along motorways and selected sections of National Highway N-5.

The government aims to provide charging points approximately every 50 kilometers on major routes to support the expansion of electric transportation. Progress is already underway, with ultrafast EV charging stations recently installed on a major motorway.

Charging Facilities at Fuel Stations and Battery Swapping

Under the policy, fuel station operators will be encouraged to install electric vehicle charging units. The government also plans to expand the availability of fast-charging, Level 2, and Level 1 charging facilities.

Battery-swapping stations are also planned for electric motorcycles and three-wheelers. These facilities will allow users to replace depleted batteries with charged ones instead of waiting for their batteries to recharge.

Incentives to Attract Private Investment

The government is introducing measures to encourage private investment in EV charging infrastructure, including a dedicated commercial electricity tariff for charging stations and faster electricity connections.

The plan also includes public-private partnerships and viability gap funding arrangements to support the financial feasibility of charging station projects.

According to the ministry, 3,800 investors expressed interest last year in establishing EV charging stations across Pakistan.

Recycling and Managing End-of-Life EV Batteries

The NEV policy also addresses the collection, transportation, reuse, dismantling, and recycling of electric vehicle batteries that have reached the end of their useful lives, particularly lithium-ion batteries.

The Ministry of Industries and Production said work is underway to develop a regulatory framework and establish a nationwide network of battery collection and recycling facilities.

These measures are part of the broader plan to support the development of electric transportation infrastructure in Pakistan.
