Elon Musk’s X has expanded its XChat messaging service, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. The service also offers end-to-end encryption and several private messaging features.
XChat Launch and Features
XChat was introduced in April 2026 as a separate messaging app for iPhone and iPad users.
The service offers encrypted chats, group conversations, file sharing, and audio and video calls.
X Numbers Enables Phone-Free Contact
In September, X introduced X Numbers, a private numeric code that allows users to contact others without revealing their phone numbers.
Users can use the code to send messages and make calls through XChat. They can also generate a new code or disable an existing one when needed.
End-to-End Encryption
According to X, its Chat service uses end-to-end encryption to protect the content of messages. PINs and cryptographic keys are also used to secure conversations.
However, X says some information, including the people involved in a conversation and the timing of messages, is not encrypted.
