Argentina players and coaching staff have been handed suspensions and fines by FIFA following a confrontation with Spanish players after their defeat in the FIFA World Cup final.
What Happened After the Final?
Following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final on July 19, several Argentine players became involved in a confrontation with Spanish players. Midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in an altercation with Spain’s Eric Garcia, while several other players also became involved.
Players Receive Heavy Suspensions
FIFA has suspended Leandro Paredes for 10 matches and Nahuel Molina for 7 matches. Both players have also been fined $90,000 each.
Coaching Staff Also Punished
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has been suspended for 3 matches and fined $30,000 for striking Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
Argentina Football Association Fined
FIFA has also imposed a total fine of $321,000 on the Argentina Football Association. FIFA has directed that $100,000 of the fine be used for a project aimed at combating discrimination.

Argentina Announces Appeal
The Argentina Football Association has announced that it will appeal FIFA’s suspensions and fines. If the appeal is rejected, the association may take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
