The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has issued a fire safety notice to the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, citing deficiencies in its fire and life safety arrangements.
The notice states that the hotel is in violation of Sections 3 and 4 of the Islamabad Fire Prevention and Life Safety Regulations 2010.
CDA Inspection Identifies Safety Deficiencies
The notice, issued on September 1, followed an inspection of the five-star hotel. According to the document, the CDA inspection team identified shortcomings in the hotel’s fire and life safety arrangements.
The development comes after a fire at the nursery ward of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on August 26 that resulted in the deaths of 14 newborn babies. Following the incident, the CDA intensified inspections of fire safety arrangements in buildings across Islamabad.
The CDA has also sealed eight other buildings in the capital over what it described as insufficient fire safety arrangements. Fines have additionally been imposed on some hospitals for failing to meet fire and life safety requirements.
Marriott Given 10 Days to Address Issues
According to the sources, the CDA has given the hotel 10 days to complete the required measures. The administration expects to address the inspection points within the next seven to eight days.
CDA had identified only a few issues of a minor nature. He added that the inspection team had pointed out three to four areas requiring attention and that the hotel administration was already working on them.
Compliance Certificate Required
The CDA has directed the hotel management to rectify the identified deficiencies and obtain a compliance certificate after completing the required measures.
The notice warns that failure to complete the required safety measures could lead to further legal action against the hotel. This may include sealing the building.
