Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal, known for popular songs such as Bairi Piya and Dola Re Dola, has revealed that she sang many songs without receiving payment during the early years of her career.
In a recent interview, Ghoshal also spoke openly about the existence of the casting couch in the Indian film industry. She acknowledged that the practice exists but said she had never personally experienced it.
Her Parents Stayed by Her Side
Ghoshal said women faced more difficulties in the entertainment industry before the rise of social media. She started working at a very young age, and her parents always accompanied her.
According to the singer, their constant presence meant that no one dared to behave inappropriately with her.
Pay Differences Are Not Only a Gender Issue
Ghoshal also addressed what she described as misconceptions about pay in the music industry. She said the issue should not be viewed solely as a difference between male and female singers.
She pointed to Arijit Singh as an example, saying many people assume he receives a very high fee for every song, but that is not entirely accurate. According to Ghoshal, leading singers in the industry also do considerable work without payment, while they may receive higher fees when there is a legitimate opportunity or demand for their services.

Shreya Ghoshal has built a long and successful playback singing career in Bollywood. Her breakthrough in film music came with Devdas, which featured several songs in her voice, including Bairi Piya, Silsila Ye Chahat Ka, Chhalak Chhalak, Morey Piya and Dola Re Dola.
Her other well-known songs include Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai, Ye Ishq Hai, Barso Re, Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, Zoobi Doobi, Manwa Laage, Sunn Raha Hai, Chikni Chameli, Nagada Sang Dhol and Deewani Mastani.
Songs such as Deewani Mastani, Chikni Chameli and Sunn Raha Hai also contributed to various film award wins and nominations during her career.
