Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said the province faces a greater security threat from neighboring provinces than from neighboring countries.
Speaking on Saturday at the inauguration of the Provincial Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Center Punjab in Lahore, she said her goal was to make people feel safe enough to sleep peacefully.
Maryam Nawaz said Punjab faces threats across its three-border areas. She stated that terrorism enters Punjab from neighboring provinces and claimed the threat from neighboring countries was comparatively lower.
Punjab shares borders with Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while its eastern border is with India.
Punjab Investing in Security Technology
The chief minister said Punjab remains under close watch but described it as a secure province where artificial intelligence and technology are being used to strengthen security.
She claimed that her government had invested billions of rupees in technology to meet Punjab’s security and safety requirements.
Maryam Nawaz recalled that when she became chief minister, she found that militants had access to more advanced technology than security personnel.
She said militants had night-vision goggles and arrived with detailed planning. According to her, Punjab now has similar systems available to its security forces.
Bulletproof CCTV and Thermal Cameras
The chief minister said CCTV cameras have been bulletproofed because militants had previously targeted them.
She added that the government has installed thermal cameras and invested in drones as part of its security technology measures.
Security Checkposts Strengthened
Maryam Nawaz also highlighted measures taken to improve the safety of security checkposts.
She compared the current arrangements with the situation two and a half years ago, saying security personnel had once been stationed behind temporary barriers with little protection.
She said checkposts now have higher walls and secure rooms where personnel can seek shelter and protect themselves in case of an attack.
