Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, former federal minister and former member of the National Assembly Hammad Azhar has been arrested by police.
According to police sources, Hammad Azhar was taken into custody in Multan and later handed over to Lahore Police. Further legal proceedings will be initiated in the cases registered against him.
Hammad Azhar Was Wanted in May 9 Cases
According to sources, Hammad Azhar had been wanted by police in several cases related to the May 9, 2023 events and had remained in hiding for a long period.
Police said he had also been declared a proclaimed offender in the May 9 cases.
Several cases related to the May 9 events have been registered against Hammad Azhar in Lahore. In January 2026, an anti-terrorism court declared seven suspects, including Hammad Azhar, proclaimed offenders in the Club Chowk attack case near the GOR Gate and issued permanent arrest warrants against them.
Police sources said Hammad Azhar will be questioned in connection with the May 9 cases after being transferred to Lahore.
His arrest comes as legal proceedings continue against several PTI leaders and workers in cases related to the May 9 events.
Hammad Azhar’s Political Positions
Hammad Azhar served as federal finance minister during the PTI government. He also served as president of PTI Punjab.
Police sources and several media reports have identified Multan as the location of Hammad Azhar’s arrest.
