Hollywood’s first AI actress, Tilly Norwood, has appeared in her first on-camera interview, including an unusual mock audition that highlighted the current limits of AI-generated performance.
During a video interview with CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister, Norwood was placed in a simulated audition. She was asked to improvise a scene in which she had just learned that her dog had died.
Norwood responded that it was a difficult situation. She said that in a real audition, she would probably stand completely still and experience the “digital pain” of the moment.
AI Performance Faces a Major Test
Wagmeister explained that Tilly does not actually possess acting abilities and requires different prompts to understand what she is expected to do.
Even after receiving initial prompts, the AI actress was unable to fully perform the scene.
The company behind Tilly Norwood, Particle6, spent hours working on a computer to prepare a complete technical setup for the CNN team.
Creator Has Ambitious Plans
The gap between expectations and reality remains noticeable. Tilly’s creator, Eline van der Velden, told CNN that she hopes her AI creation can eventually achieve popularity comparable to Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman.
Van der Velden said the project is not intended to eliminate any aspect of traditional filmmaking. She also said Tilly was never designed to replace a real actor.
However, that position has faced strong resistance within the creative community, particularly in Hollywood. Generative AI has been viewed as an existential threat to human labor, compensation and creative work.
The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild staged a historic strike in 2023 that lasted for almost four months.
Tilly Norwood’s First Film Role
Tilly Norwood has not yet been cast in a released film. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, she is set to play a leading role in the upcoming feature-length comedy-drama “Miss Aligned.”
The film has been described as a “hybrid production,” bringing traditional directors, writers and editors together with AI technical specialists.
