The federal government has reportedly prepared a strategy for possible action against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi if he does not change his approach, according to sources.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to consult his associates on the proposed strategy on October 10, 2026. Important decisions are anticipated following consultations and briefings by the federal government, the sources said.
Sources have claimed that preparations are also underway for the possible arrest or detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) central leaders across the country.
Possible Emergency or Governor’s Rule in KP
According to the sources, strict action could follow if an emergency is imposed or governor’s rule is introduced in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A strategy has reportedly been prepared to mobilise the police and bureaucracy in the province. Authorities may also initiate arrests and legal proceedings against people participating in protests.
The provincial administration could receive special instructions to restrict the scale of demonstrations, the sources added. However, the reported measures and possible decisions have not been officially confirmed in the supplied report.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman Advises Against Emergency
In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif contacted Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman by telephone following a consultative meeting on the previous night.
According to sources, Fazlur Rehman advised the prime minister to avoid imposing an emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning that such measures could politically harm the governing parties.
The two leaders reportedly discussed the deadlock in negotiations and PTI’s planned long march. Fazlur Rehman expressed his willingness to play a role in resolving the issues through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Prime Minister Reaffirms Position on Negotiations
During the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Fazlur Rehman’s political insight and his decision to remain away from the protest movement.
The prime minister reportedly said the federal government had made sincere efforts to resolve the issues through negotiations, but the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s refusal to cooperate on counterterrorism measures had contributed to the failure of the talks.
He stressed that there could be no compromise in the fight against terrorism and that negligence in this regard was unacceptable.
Call for Another Chance for Dialogue
Maulana Fazlur Rehman urged the federal government and PTI to give negotiations another opportunity to improve the situation.
In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government remained willing to negotiate but would not accept an attempt to march on Islamabad.
He called on PTI to end its long march and return to the negotiating table to resolve the outstanding issues through dialogue.
