Sri Lanka created history on Thursday, October 22, 2026, by chasing down England’s massive target of 430 runs in the third match of the ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi.
Sri Lanka reached 430 for eight in 49.5 overs, recording the second-highest successful run chase in One-Day International (ODI) cricket history. The victory also broke the record for the highest ODI total scored by a team on Pakistani soil.
Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka Lead Sri Lanka to Victory
Pavan Rathnayake played a crucial role in the chase, scoring 130 off 106 balls to give Sri Lanka a strong platform.
Opening batter Oshada Fernando contributed 97 off 83 balls, keeping the required run rate within reach.
Dasun Shanaka then changed the course of the match with an explosive 97 off just 50 balls, putting Sri Lanka firmly in contention for victory.
Janith Liyanage added further momentum with 61 off 27 balls, helping Sri Lanka complete the record-breaking chase with one ball remaining.
England Set a Record Total of 429
Earlier, England posted 429 for four in their allotted 50 overs after being put to the test by Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
Captain Harry Brook led the charge with a spectacular 202 off 116 balls, including 21 fours and 10 sixes.
His double century powered England to what was then the highest ODI team total recorded in Pakistan.
Brook and Joe Root Build a Strong Partnership
England’s openers Tom Banton and Ben Duckett added 74 runs for the first wicket before both were dismissed by Dunith Wellalage.
Banton scored 51, while Duckett contributed 29.
Brook and Joe Root then steadied England’s innings with a 159-run partnership for the third wicket. Root scored 69 off 66 balls before departing.
Will Jacks Adds Late-Innings Firepower
Will Jacks provided a powerful finish, smashing an unbeaten 60 off 33 balls.
He and Brook put together an explosive 185-run partnership for the fifth wicket off just 77 balls, taking England to 429 for four.
Wellalage was Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker with two dismissals, while Asitha Fernando and Janith Liyanage claimed one wicket each.
Sri Lanka Break Pakistan’s Previous ODI Record
England’s total surpassed Pakistan’s previous record for the highest ODI team score on home soil. Pakistan had scored 375 for three against Zimbabwe in 2015.
However, Sri Lanka’s remarkable batting performance ensured that England’s record-breaking total was not enough to secure victory, producing a historic result in the Rawalpindi tri-series.
