ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI, August 23, 2026: Islamabad and Rawalpindi received heavy monsoon rainfall, inundating low-lying areas and raising concerns over possible urban flooding as the wet spell continues across the twin cities.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), several locations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi recorded more than 70 millimetres of rain. Islamabad’s Saidpur recorded the highest rainfall at 85mm, followed by Golra and PMD at 75mm, while Bokhra received 52mm.
In Rawalpindi, 64mm of rain was recorded at Shamsabad, 62mm at Pirwadhai, 64mm at Katarian, 43mm at Gowalmandi and 35mm in the Kacheri area.
Heavy rainfall caused rainwater to enter low-lying streets in Arya Mohalla and adjoining areas, creating difficulties for residents and disrupting normal movement.
The rainfall was particularly intense in the Nullah Lai catchment area, increasing concerns over a sudden rise in water levels and the possibility of flooding in vulnerable parts of Rawalpindi.
More Rain Forecast
The monsoon spell remains active in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The PMD has forecast further rain, strong winds and thunderstorms in the twin cities and upper Punjab, warning that heavy showers could cause water accumulation in urban areas.
The Daily Flood Bulletin issued on August 22, 2026, said widespread rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls, were expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other parts of the upper regions.
The Flood Forecasting Division has also warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with rising water levels in local streams and nullahs during periods of intense rainfall.
According to the PMD, moist monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea, combined with a westerly weather system, are influencing weather conditions over the upper parts of the country, keeping the rain spell active.
Nullah Lai Under Watch
The situation in Nullah Lai and its catchment areas remains particularly important because intense rainfall upstream can cause a rapid increase in water levels, posing a threat to low-lying localities.
Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation and maintaining emergency arrangements in vulnerable areas. Recent heavy rainfall episodes have already caused significant rises in Nullah Lai, prompting flood warnings and deployment of emergency teams.
The PMD’s Flood Forecasting Division continues to provide real-time flood monitoring, weather warnings and river-flow updates.
Citizens Advised to Remain Cautious
The meteorological authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and thunderstorms. Residents are urged to stay away from electricity poles, trees, open drains and fast-flowing rainwater.
Motorists have also been advised to exercise extreme caution on waterlogged roads and avoid travelling through flooded underpasses and areas where water levels are rising.
With further rainfall expected, residents of low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local administration and emergency services.
