Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has nominated Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani as the party’s candidate for the office of Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Gilani will submit his nomination papers on behalf of the PML-N for the election of the AJK prime minister.
Who is Iftkhar Gilani?
Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani is a former member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. In the 2026 AJK elections, he contested from LA-29 Muzaffarabad-III on a PML-N ticket and finished second. He was later nominated by the PML-N for the technocrat seat in the AJK Assembly and was elected to the reserved seat on August 24, 2026.
On August 27, 2026, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif nominated Gilani as the party’s candidate for Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The AJK Legislative Assembly is scheduled to elect the new prime minister on August 28, 2026.
Iftikhar Gilani is a PML-N lawyer-politician and former AJK lawmaker who has now been nominated by Nawaz Sharif to become the next Prime Minister of AJK.

Nawaz Sharif Directs Submission of Nomination Papers
Nawaz Sharif has directed Barrister Iftikhar Ali Gilani to file his nomination papers for the AJK prime ministerial election. The party has decided that Gilani will contest the election as its candidate for the top office.
Maryam Aurangzeb Confirms Nomination
PML-N Central Information Secretary Maryam Aurangzeb confirmed Gilani’s nomination, saying the decision to nominate him for the AJK premiership was made with the approval of Nawaz Sharif.
According to party sources, Gilani will formally submit his nomination papers for the election. The process will then move toward the election of the leader of the house in the AJK Assembly.
