US President Donald Trump has expressed anger over not receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, criticising Norway and describing the decision as shameful. He claimed the United States deserved the award and warned that his country would not forget the decision.

Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday in support of Republican candidates, Trump devoted a substantial part of his speech to complaining about being overlooked for the prestigious honour.

Trump said the decision was an embarrassment for the United States and a stain on Norway’s reputation. He argued that, as president representing the country, he should have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Criticism of the Nobel Committee

Trump said the Nobel Peace Prize Committee’s decision had damaged the award’s credibility. He described those responsible for the decision as anti-democratic and enemies of civilisation.

Addressing Norway, he warned that the United States would remember that it had not been awarded the peace prize.

Trump’s remarks followed the announcement that South African human rights lawyer and judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay had won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to international law and the promotion of peace.

Fresh Claims About Iran and the Russia-Ukraine War

During his speech, Trump referred to several conflicts and disputes that he claimed to have helped resolve. However, some of the situations he mentioned were not formal wars, while others remained unresolved.

He also claimed that he would soon bring the Iran issue and the Russia-Ukraine war to an end.

Speaking about Iran, Trump said the matter would be resolved in one way or another in the near future. He asserted that Iran would either accept all US demands or cease to exist, reflecting his hard-line position towards Tehran.

Trump Claims He Prevented Iran From Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

Trump claimed that he had prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, averting the risk of mass casualties in the Middle East, Europe and potentially the United States.

However, a 2025 US intelligence report stated that Iran had suspended its efforts to develop nuclear weapons in 2003. The report provides important context for assessing Trump’s claim.

Trump Targets Nobel Laureate Navi Pillay

Trump also criticised Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay, describing her as a liberal figure associated with the United Nations and suggesting that few people knew who she was.

Pillay is a prominent South African human rights lawyer who has held senior positions in the United Nations human rights system. She also headed a UN commission of inquiry that concluded in a report published in September 2025 that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects the allegation.

Recognition for Human Rights and International Law

Pillay received the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work promoting peace and international law.

Raised during South Africa’s apartheid era, she pursued a legal career focused on human rights and defended people involved in the struggle against racial discrimination.

Trump’s criticism of the Nobel Peace Prize decision comes as he continues to claim that he can secure rapid results in addressing Iran and ending the Russia-Ukraine war. His remarks combined frustration over the award with a broader defence of his foreign policy record and approach to international conflicts.
