Consumers have been forced to pay higher fuel prices and a heavy petroleum levy during the two and a half years of the Shehbaz government.
According to government documents, the federal government collected a record Rs3,137 billion in petroleum levy from consumers during the period. Over the same period, the price of high-speed diesel increased by Rs233 per litre, while petrol became Rs178.66 per litre more expensive.
Fuel Prices Reach Record Levels
At the start of the current government on March 4, 2024, high-speed diesel was priced at Rs287.33 per litre. Its price later reached Rs520.35 per litre.
The price of petrol stood at Rs279.75 per litre on March 4, 2024. It later reached Rs458.41 per litre, marking the first time in the country’s history that petrol crossed that level, according to the source.
Rs1,567 Billion Levy Collected in FY2025-26
Government documents show that the federal government collected Rs1,567 billion in petroleum levy during fiscal year 2025-26.
In addition, more than Rs50 billion was collected separately as a carbon levy on petrol and diesel.
During fiscal year 2024-25, petroleum levy collections stood at Rs1,220 billion. In the April-June 2024 quarter, the government collected Rs299.63 billion under the levy.
Petroleum Levy Stands at Rs80 Per Litre
At present, a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre is imposed on both petrol and diesel.
The government is also collecting a separate climate support levy of Rs5 per litre on each fuel.
The figures underline the substantial financial burden placed on consumers through petroleum-related levies and higher fuel prices during the current government’s tenure.
