The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) has opened applications for its 2027 Journalist in Residence program, inviting experienced international science and technology journalists to apply.

Selected journalists will receive €15,000 in compensation, along with coverage of travel expenses. The residency will last between three and six months and is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

Program Location and Eligibility

The program will be held at ISTA’s campus in Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, Austria.

ISTA is seeking experienced science and technology journalists working across different media formats. English is the institute’s main working language, but journalists working in other languages are also encouraged to apply.

Participants will have access to more than 90 research groups and an international academic community representing more than 80 nationalities.

What the Residency Offers

Selected journalists will be able to attend seminars, lectures, campus events and other research activities. They will also have opportunities to meet researchers and learn about ongoing scientific work across different fields.

ISTA does not require participants to publish any content during the residency. Journalists will retain full editorial independence and will have access to facilities including the ISTA library and gym.

Compensation and Accommodation

ISTA will provide selected journalists with €15,000 in compensation and cover their travel expenses. Participants will be responsible for their own accommodation and daily living costs.

On-campus accommodation may be available subject to availability. Participants can also seek accommodation in Klosterneuburg or nearby Vienna.

Responsibilities of Participants

Journalists selected for the program will be expected to share their professional experience with the ISTA community.

This may include participating in workshops, media training sessions and panel discussions.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit their complete applications by email to journalistresidency@ista.ac.at.

Applications must include a CV, cover letter and samples of previous journalistic work. Candidates must also submit a short residency proposal outlining what they would like to explore during their stay at ISTA.

Applicants are required to name two or three ISTA research groups they would like to engage with during the residency.
