Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was necessary and should have been imposed earlier due to the deteriorating law and order situation.
Speaking to the media in London on October 17, 2026, Nawaz said the situation in the province had worsened and was becoming increasingly difficult to control. He described the emergency as a necessary step that should have been taken sooner.
Criticism of PTI’s 13-Year Rule
Nawaz Sharif criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleging that the party had damaged Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during its 13 years in power.
He questioned the use of provincial government resources for political confrontation with the federal government, asking which country allowed a chief minister to use official resources to launch an attack on the federal capital.
Concerns Over Development and Public Welfare
The PML-N president claimed that development work had not been carried out adequately in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and that residents had been kept deprived of progress and prosperity.
He said people from the province had previously travelled to Lahore to seek medical treatment and stressed that residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also deserved access to prosperity and better facilities.
Nawaz questioned the use of provincial resources against Islamabad and other provinces, arguing that public funds should serve the people rather than be used for political confrontation.
Government Efforts for the Public
Nawaz Sharif said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been freed from what he described as PTI’s worst government.
He added that the federal and provincial governments were working to improve conditions for ordinary citizens.
