Pakistan plans to build a new six-lane motorway connecting Lahore and Rawalpindi, reducing the distance between the two cities from 380 kilometres to 280 kilometres, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has announced.

The project is targeted for completion by the end of 2027 and is expected to cut travel time between Lahore and Islamabad from three and a half hours to two and a half hours.

Key Punjab Cities to Be Connected

Abdul Aleem Khan said the new motorway would connect several major cities in Punjab, including Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lala Musa, Kharian and Jhelum.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between some of the province’s busiest urban centres and make travel more convenient for commuters and transport operators.

Sialkot Motorway to Be Expanded

The communications minister also announced plans to expand the Sialkot Motorway from four lanes to six lanes.

An additional Rs10 billion has been allocated for the expansion to enable the motorway to be constructed with six lanes, according to the minister.

He said the new infrastructure would help passengers and transporters save time and fuel while improving road connectivity across Punjab.

Sukkur Motorway Project Advances

Abdul Aleem Khan also said efforts were underway to lay the foundation stone of the Sukkur Motorway next month.

According to the minister, three sections of the Sukkur Motorway have been approved. The broader plan also includes construction of a motorway connecting Sukkur with Hyderabad.
