More than 500 dolphins belonging to a rare species have been spotted in the coastal waters of Gwadar, Balochistan, in a development highlighting the importance of protecting Pakistan’s marine life and coastal ecosystems.
According to experts, the species is scientifically known as the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus), which is found in the waters of the Arabian Sea, including coastal areas of Balochistan.
Why the Dolphin Sighting Matters
The sighting of such a large group of dolphins in Gwadar’s coastal waters highlights the importance of marine conservation and maintaining the ecological balance of coastal environments.
Experts emphasise that protecting marine animals is essential to preserving the natural balance of the marine ecosystem.
Pakistan’s coastal waters are also home to turtles, whales and other marine species. Their protection is important for the long-term health and sustainability of the marine environment.
Efforts to Protect Marine Life in Pakistan
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Pakistan) is working with fishermen and relevant institutions to support marine conservation efforts across the country.
According to WWF-Pakistan, the country’s coastal waters are home to 26 species of dolphins, whales and other marine life.
Protecting these species is essential not only for their survival but also for maintaining the natural balance of Pakistan’s coastal ecosystems.
