Houthi forces have attacked four Saudi cities, injuring 73 civilians, including women and children, according to Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki.
The attacks targeted Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, where civilian and economic facilities were hit, according to the Saudi-led coalition.
Who Are the Houthis?
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are an allegedly Iran-aligned armed movement based in Yemen. They control much of northern Yemen, including the country’s most populated areas.
The group seized the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in 2014.The conflict later entered a period of reduced fighting after a UN-brokered truce in 2022, but tensions have risen again in recent months.
The Houthis have also carried out attacks involving missiles and drones. In recent months, the group has targeted Saudi interests and shipping in the Red Sea.
The Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in July, while the group has said its actions are linked to the wider conflict involving Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Cities Targeted
Major General Turki Al-Malki said civilian and economic facilities were targeted in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran.
Women and children were among the 73 people injured in the attacks.
Al-Malki described the attacks as a clear violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty. He said the objective was to damage Saudi Arabia’s national assets and civilian facilities.
He also said the Houthi actions were harming efforts to promote peace and stability in Yemen and neighboring countries.
