Instagram has announced measures targeting profiles that feature AI-generated people and appear to represent real individuals.
The Meta-owned social media platform said it is responding to growing concerns among users about profiles that look like they belong to real people but are later revealed to feature AI-generated individuals.
New Label for AI-Generated Profiles
Instagram will not ban these accounts. Instead, it plans to introduce a new label identifying them as “AI-Generated Profile.”
The new label will replace the existing “AI Creator” label. Instagram also said accounts featuring fictional people that do not carry the required label could have their reach restricted.
The company said the changes are based on feedback from users. Instagram began testing the “AI Creator” label earlier this year as an initial response to the growing trend of AI-generated fictional people being used to create seemingly authentic profiles.
Instagram to Detect AI-Generated People
Instagram said it will attempt to automatically identify accounts that use AI-generated people.
Users will then be able to choose whether to add the relevant label to their profile or appeal Instagram’s decision. Accounts that do not comply could be hidden from the Explore page and Reels, limiting their reach.
However, the changes will not apply to accounts that simply use AI tools to create posts for the app. The measures are specifically aimed at accounts that prominently feature an AI-generated person.
Instagram will continue allowing such accounts to operate, but it wants people who use AI to create fictional profiles to clearly label them. The company said this would help ensure that profiles accurately reflect their AI-based identity.
More Changes Could Follow
Instagram indicated that further changes could be introduced in the future.
The company said the move is part of its ongoing efforts to improve transparency and help users better understand the person or entity behind the content they see on the platform.
