Fourteen newborn babies were killed in a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, triggering grief and anger across the country.
Several showbiz personalities have expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragedy. They have also called for those responsible to be held accountable.
Mahira Khan questions accountability
Actress Mahira Khan reacted strongly to the tragedy, saying people in Pakistan continue to lose their lives because of negligence, power, gender discrimination and silence.
She questioned how many more lives the country would have to lose and how long such conditions would continue.
Mahira said recent events had left her feeling deeply helpless and disappointed. She said she often breaks down while watching the daily news.
The actress also expressed concern that innocent people who lose their lives in tragedies could soon become “another hashtag” before the public eventually moves on.
Referring to the 14 newborns who died at PIMS and other tragic incidents in the country, Mahira questioned who should be held responsible and what accountability means if no one is ever answerable.
Bushra Ansari criticises health minister
Senior actress Bushra Ansari also expressed deep grief and anger over the PIMS tragedy.
She described the suffering of the affected families as unimaginable and criticised what she described as Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal’s alleged conduct.
Bushra said the affected families were already suffering immense trauma after losing their children. She argued that scolding them instead of listening to their complaints was inappropriate.
She urged the health minister to fulfil his responsibilities and listen to the concerns of the public.
Khalid Anum raises concerns over investigations
Senior actor Khalid Anum also criticised the authorities. He said expecting action against those responsible was like “playing a flute before a buffalo.”
He repeated a saying attributed to renowned columnist Ardeshir Cowasjee: “The shameless cannot be made ashamed.”
Khalid expressed concern that committees would be formed after the tragedy, investigations would be conducted, reports would be issued and announcements would be made, but those responsible might ultimately face no practical action.
He prayed that those responsible for the PIMS tragedy would be brought to justice.
Naimal Khawar asks how many more mothers must lose their children
Actress Naimal Khawar also expressed anger and sorrow over the deaths of the newborn babies.
She asked how many more mothers would have to lose their children and how many more girls would have to suffer before such incidents came to an end.
Naimal said her heart was with the families who lost their newborns at PIMS, Hina Javed, and every woman and girl who had faced unimaginable violence.
The showbiz personalities collectively expressed solidarity with the affected families. They called for a transparent investigation into the PIMS tragedy and demanded that anyone found responsible for negligence or failure be held accountable under the law.
