14 Newborns Die in Devastating Fire at PIMS Nursery

Islamabad: Fourteen newborn babies were killed in a devastating fire that broke out on Wednesday morning in the nursery of the Gynaecology Ward at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Initial reports said the fire started after an explosion involving an air-conditioning compressor.

According to rescue sources, the fire broke out at around 7am. The blaze quickly spread through the nursery after the air-conditioning compressor reportedly exploded.

According to PIMS hospital records, 15 babies were admitted to the ward, of whom only one could be rescued. PIMS Executive Director Imran Sikandar and spokesperson Dr Aneza Jaleel confirmed that 14 babies had died in the incident.

14 Newborns Killed

PIMS authorities said 16 newborn babies were present in the nursery at the time of the incident. One baby was rescued safely, while 14 others could not survive.

Rescue teams reached the hospital soon after receiving information about the fire and brought the blaze under control. The incident caused concern and distress among patients, families and hospital staff.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the safety arrangements at the hospital. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
