Russia’s territory could see a slight increase as melting glaciers in the Arctic reveal previously covered land and potentially create new islands, according to a Russian news report.
Experts are closely monitoring areas including Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, where retreating glaciers could expose new sections of land.
Potential New Islands in the Arctic
Andrei Leonov, head of Arctic studies at Admiral Makarov State University in St. Petersburg, said new islands are expected to emerge in these areas as glaciers retreat.
However, Leonov cautioned that the prediction cannot be considered 100 percent certain.
He noted that new islands have emerged in the Arctic in the past, but newly exposed land does not always remain a permanent island.
Landforms May Change Over Time
According to the expert, an island can sometimes emerge as a result of a glacier or ice mass retreating. However, after several years, a sand connection may form between the island and the mainland, turning it into a peninsula rather than a separate island.
Arctic Becomes More Accessible
The Arctic region is becoming increasingly accessible due to climate change. Russia is expanding its activities in the region because of its potential for economic activity, mineral resources and maritime trade.
Russia is also further expanding its large icebreaker fleet. Russian officials have said the Northern Sea Route could become important for global trade in the future.
