US President Donald Trump has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that he says gives the United States permanent control over security and other needs in Greenland. The agreement would also allow Washington to expand its military presence on the Arctic island.
Trump’s Security Claims
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would have the ability to take whatever measures it considers necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the United States.
Trump also said the agreement would prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases, maintaining military forces or making sensitive investments in Greenland without written US approval.
Expanded US Military Presence
Trump said the United States would immediately begin the process of developing a larger military presence in suitable areas of Greenland and would work with the Greenlandic people on the initiative.
The United States already has military access and facilities in Greenland, while the new agreement would provide permanent access, basing and overflight rights, according to media.
Denmark and Greenland Maintain Sovereignty
The agreement does not transfer Greenland to the United States. Reports say the territory will remain under Danish and Greenlandic sovereignty, while Danish and Greenlandic leaders have said the agreement recognizes Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Denmark and Greenland said the pact is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and will require parliamentary approval in both Copenhagen and Nuuk.
Trump Calls Deal Strategically Important
Trump said previous US presidents had recognized Greenland’s strategic importance but had failed to resolve the issue permanently.
He described the agreement as important for the United States, Denmark, Greenland and their allies. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while recognizing the Kingdom of Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
