BEIJING, August 23, 2026: A Chinese humanoid robot has made headlines after completing the 100-metre sprint in 9.39 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, recording a time faster than Usain Bolt’s long-standing human world record of 9.58 seconds.
The robot, Tiangong Ultra, was developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. It achieved the remarkable time during a preliminary heat at the second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games.
Bolt established the men’s 100-metre world record of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
Tiangong Ultra overtook another Chinese humanoid robot, Lightning, near the finish line. Lightning, developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, completed the race in 9.47 seconds, also faster than Bolt’s human record.

Honor’s Robot Also Shows Impressive Speed
Honor’s Humanoid robot Lightning had already attracted attention before the official competition after reportedly completing a 100-metre test run in 9.32 seconds.
The robot also participated in a 21-kilometre humanoid half-marathon in Beijing earlier this year, completing the distance in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
Researchers reportedly extended the robot’s leg length by around 10 centimetres ahead of the games to improve its running performance.
Robots Compete in Multiple Events
The World Humanoid Robot Games are not limited to sprinting. Humanoid robots are competing in a range of events, including football, table tennis, boxing and other physical challenges.
The five-day event features 51 competitions, bringing together more than 2,000 humanoid robots. The games are designed to demonstrate advances in speed, balance, coordination, artificial intelligence and the ability of robots to perform complex tasks.
The event highlights China’s rapid progress in Humanoid robotics, an area that Beijing considers strategically important. Chinese companies and researchers are increasingly developing robots for potential use in manufacturing, logistics, services and other real-world applications.
