A report by artificial intelligence company Anthropic has revealed that an Iran-linked group used an advanced AI model to collect military information and investigate possible weaknesses in US naval communications systems.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the group gathered military maps and satellite images while using Anthropic’s Claude AI model to assist with the activity.
The use of artificial intelligence
Anthropic reportedly detected the operation and disrupted it. The company has since released a report detailing similar activities and the potential risks associated with the misuse of artificial intelligence.
The risks identified in the report include missile development, psychological warfare and intelligence gathering against adversaries.
Anthropic’s Claude AI use?
The report also highlighted the use of Anthropic’s Claude AI tool by the US military. During US operations against Iran, the US Central Command reportedly used Claude for various military purposes.
The developments have raised further concerns about the use of advanced AI systems in military planning, intelligence operations and cyber-related activities.
