Iran has called for an end to the fighting and renewed negotiations with the United States, while U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the conflict. A news agency reported that Iran is insisting that the standoff can only be resolved through diplomacy.
Iran’s proposal was conveyed to the United States through Qatari mediators and included reopening the Strait of Hormuz in return for an end to the U.S. naval blockade, the release of some frozen Iranian assets and an easing of restrictions on Iranian oil exports.
Conditions for Reopening Hormuz
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said reopening the Strait of Hormuz would depend on Iran’s conditions being met. He said negotiations were the only way forward and that Tehran was still waiting for the mediators to formally communicate Washington’s final response.
According to Reuters, Iran presented the peace proposal last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Araghchi had said that, if the United States agreed, a seven-day process could begin to reopen the strait and halt regional fighting, after which the two sides could enter broader negotiations by mutual agreement.
Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal
Trump rejected the Iranian proposal on Saturday. Reports based on U.S. officials said the president remains skeptical that Tehran would accept U.S. demands. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump has told aides he expects U.S. bombing of Iran could resume after the November midterm elections.
However, U.S. officials said Trump’s position could change while negotiations continue, and the nature and timing of any possible renewed military action remain unclear.
Iran Maintains Position on Nuclear Program
Iranian officials have given no indication of flexibility over the country’s nuclear program. A senior Iranian official told media that even if Washington accepted the peace proposal, Tehran would not compromise on what it considers its rights, including uranium enrichment and keeping enriched uranium inside the country.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran is prepared to negotiate on its nuclear program and other issues, but will not accept pressure or threats. He said Iran does not want war but would defend itself against pressure, threats and attacks.
Conflict Disrupts Oil Supplies
Reuters reported that the conflict, which began on February 28, has disrupted oil shipments and caused damage to the global economy. The continuing tensions have also affected regional trade and contributed to further military activity involving Iran and its allies.
