The federal government has introduced new austerity measures, ordering a 50% reduction in fuel consumption by official vehicles and imposing a three-month ban on foreign visits by government officials.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, all government departments have been directed to halve fuel consumption by official vehicles. The measures are aimed at reducing government spending and conserving petroleum supplies amid regional tensions.
5% Cut in Government Expenditure
The government has also ordered a 5% reduction in budgetary expenditures, excluding employees’ salaries and allowances.
Ban on New Government Vehicles
Federal government departments have been completely barred from purchasing new vehicles. However, vehicles required for development projects will remain exempt from the restriction.
Three-Month Ban on Official Foreign Visits
The government has imposed a three-month ban on all official foreign visits by government officials.
In unavoidable circumstances, federal ministers and government officers may be allowed to travel abroad, but they will be required to travel in economy class.
PM Shehbaz Sharif Leaves for UK
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has departed for the United Kingdom, where he will stay for a few days before travelling to the United States.
The notification issued on June 19 regarding the closure of shops and businesses will also remain in effect.
