More than 28 days after the death of Karachi-based young businessman Mir Raza, the circumstances surrounding the case remain unresolved. His father, Mir Hussain, has expressed serious reservations about the ongoing investigation and said he wants the case to be investigated only through a Joint Investigation Team (JIT).
A mourning atmosphere continues outside Mir Raza’s home, where banners calling for justice remain displayed.
A large number of citizens and young people have also continued protesting over the incident, expressing solidarity with the family and demanding immediate and transparent justice.
Family Rejects Existing Investigation Teams
Two investigation teams, including the district police and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), have previously been formed to investigate the case. However, Mir Raza’s family expressed a lack of confidence in both teams.
Following their reservations, a third investigation team was established under the leadership of DIG Amir Farooqi, which is currently investigating the case.
Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court formed a judicial commission on August 24. The victim’s family, however, has also refused to accept the judicial commission.
Father Calls for a Joint Investigation Team
Speaking to The Independent Urdu, Mir Hussain said he wanted the investigation to be conducted through a JIT.
He questioned why there appeared to be obstacles in the way of justice and asked why the government had reservations if the family wanted the case investigated by a JIT.
He also said that if the government intended to establish a judicial commission, the family should have been taken into confidence before the decision was made.
Mir Hussain clarified that he had no doubts about the judge personally or about his ability to deliver justice. His concern, he said, was why a judicial commission was suddenly formed when a police team headed by Amir Farooqi was already investigating the case.
He believes that all aspects of the case cannot be fully uncovered without a JIT.
According to Mir Hussain, the current police investigation team has completely failed to bring the actual facts to light since July 29.
Questions Over CCTV Footage and Suspicious Activity
Mir Hussain said he had provided police with the phone numbers of all of his son’s friends because of suspicions surrounding the case, allowing investigators to examine the matter thoroughly.
He also said the family had identified a white Alto car to the police but alleged that investigators were showing only selected CCTV footage. According to him, important portions were missing whenever the family requested complete footage.
Mir Hussain questioned the presence of a motorcyclist near a mosque at around 3:30am on July 29. He also asked about a rickshaw that was reportedly present at the location from around 4:30am to 8:30am on July 28.
He further questioned why seven to eight unusual individuals were present at the location on the morning of July 28 when, according to him, they were not normally seen there.
He also called for clarification regarding an alleged police vehicle from the local station that was parked at the crime scene.
Mir Hussain said the evidence covering the entire 24-hour period should be made available.
Father Alleges Brutal Treatment
In an emotional account, Mir Hussain described what he said were severe acts of violence against his son. He alleged that Mir Raza was first rendered unconscious, then severely assaulted, subjected to acid, and suffered fractures to his bones, nose and skull. He also alleged that his son’s face was badly burned.
In anguish, he questioned how anyone capable of such brutality could have children of their own.
Mir Hussain also expressed fears that attempts were being made to conceal the brutal killing and suppress the actual facts. He said the government’s approach appeared to suggest that the case was being pushed aside.
He maintained that regardless of how powerful the killer may be, he believed the injustice and brutality suffered by Mir Raza would eventually come to light.
