The Punjab government has held consultations on transitioning to environmentally friendly transport and generating carbon credits under the Punjab Clean Air Program.
The program proposes providing around 120,000 electric two- and three-wheelers across Punjab through affordable financing. The initiative aims to reduce vehicle emissions and generate tradable carbon credits through verified emission reductions.
Affordable Financing for Electric Vehicles
Participants discussed low-interest installment and financing models to make electric vehicles more accessible to commuters and commercial operators.
The meeting also covered plans for charging stations, used battery management, and targeted access to electric vehicles for women and low-income groups.
Plan to Generate Carbon Credits
The consultation focused on developing transparent systems to measure, report and verify emission reductions so the project can qualify for carbon credits under the internationally recognized Verified Carbon Standard.
The standard is managed by Verra.
Stakeholders Attend Consultation
Representatives from the Environment, Excise, Transport and Planning and Development departments, the Bank of Punjab, vehicle manufacturers, dealers, battery-swapping companies, financial institutions, civil society and consumers attended the consultation.
The Punjab government said actionable feedback from the consultation would be incorporated into the project documents and implementation procedures.
The consultation is part of the broader Punjab Clean Air Program, which aims to reduce smog, vehicle emissions and other sources of air pollution across the province.
