The federal government is considering emergency measures to reduce petrol consumption as global tensions worsen and petrol prices approach Rs. 400 per litre.
According to sources, the government is reviewing several proposals to manage energy pressures arising from the ongoing US-Iran conflict and ensure the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products in Pakistan.
Smart Petroleum Lockdown Proposal
Sources said the government is considering a “smart petroleum lockdown” under which citizens could receive three days off each week, while business and government activities would continue for four days.
Under the proposal, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday could be designated as restricted-movement days. The measure aims to reduce unnecessary travel, conserve fuel, and lower overall petroleum consumption across the country.
Business and Government Activities to Continue
Under the proposed plan, businesses and government offices would continue their routine operations for four days a week. The government aims to reduce demand for petroleum products by limiting unnecessary movement over the weekend.
According to sources, authorities are consulting on the smart lockdown strategy to address a possible energy crisis linked to changing global conditions and resulting energy pressures.
The government is also assessing the potential impact of the proposal on public activities, businesses, and government operations. However, no final decision has been made on the plan.
