Jamaat-e-Islami has announced that it will postpone its long march against the petroleum levy for a few days following a request from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman made the announcement at a press conference in Multan on Tuesday, saying the delay would give the government an opportunity to address public concerns and hold talks on relief measures.
Prime Minister’s Request
According to Hafiz Naeem, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif contacted him by phone and requested that the long march be postponed for a few days.
The request came after Jamaat-e-Islami’s train march reached Multan. Shehbaz Sharif said he was ready to hold meaningful talks with the party on the petroleum levy after returning to Pakistan.
Caravans to Stay in Multan
Hafiz Naeem said Jamaat-e-Islami’s caravans would remain where they were until he met with the prime minister.
He said the party did not want any law and order problem or confrontation with the government. Jamaat-e-Islami had taken to the streets to raise public concerns, and the government should respect its right to protest.
Protest to Continue
The JI emir clarified that postponing the long march did not mean an end to the protest.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its campaign over its demands while engaging with the government on measures aimed at providing relief to the public.
