The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved free travel on the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system for citizens aged 60 and above.
Under the scheme, eligible senior citizens will be issued Ehsaas Buzurg Cards. Their eligibility will be verified through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) before the cards are issued.
Annual Cost Estimated at Rs935 Million
According to the provincial government, the scheme will cost approximately Rs935 million annually.
The government has set a target to complete the issuance of the cards within five months.
Free Travel Through Ehsaas Buzurg Card
According to TransPeshawar’s website, more than 300,000 passengers use the Peshawar BRT system every day.
Under the new facility, citizens aged 60 or above will be able to use the BRT service free of charge through the Ehsaas Buzurg Card.
Existing BRT Cards to Be Verified
BRT spokesperson Sadaf Kamil said that BRT cards issued during the past five to six months have already been verified through NADRA.
She said work would also be carried out on the records of cards issued before that period.
Rs500 Fine for Misuse
According to the spokesperson, a fine of Rs500 will be imposed on anyone found misusing the Ehsaas Buzurg Card.
Officials said eligible senior citizens will be able to travel free on the BRT once the verification and card issuance process has been completed.
