Pakistan has decided to consider further tightening laws governing social media use, with the Ministry of Interior planning consultations with all relevant stakeholders.
According to sources, stricter regulations are being considered in response to increasing incidents of child exploitation and obscenity on social media. A proposal to set a minimum age for social media users is also under consideration.
Proposals to Address Obscenity
Sources said various proposals have also been included to address obscenity associated with content produced under the name of family vlogging.
The option of restricting or banning certain social media platforms, similar to measures adopted by some other countries, will also be considered.
Stakeholder Consultation
Final decisions will be made after consultations at a meeting to be held by the Ministry of Interior. Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and federal and provincial police departments will participate in the meeting.
Review of Child Exploitation Cases
The meeting will include a review of cases related to child exploitation and obscenity. Social media policies adopted by various countries, including Australia, will also be examined as part of the consultation process.
