Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has sparked a fresh political debate in Pakistan with his recent statements. A few days ago, his remark that "the current system has collapsed” drew widespread attention from political observers and the media. Now, his latest assertion that "this government will complete its five-year term, and Shehbaz Sharif will complete five years as Prime Minister” has given the discussion a new direction.
Mohsin Naqvi’s Earlier Statement
Following Mohsin Naqvi’s earlier remarks, speculation grew in political circles that there could be a shift in relations between the government and state institutions. Some analysts viewed his comments as strong criticism of the government’s performance, while opposition parties also used the statement to support their own political narrative. Later, calls by the military spokesperson for improved governance and reforms further fueled political speculation.
However, in his latest media interaction, the Interior Minister made it clear that the current government would complete its constitutional term. According to him, "This government will complete five years, and Shehbaz Sharif will complete five years as Prime Minister.” Many observers believe this statement was intended to balance the political impression created by his earlier remarks.
Performance of the Ministry
Responding to questions about his ministry’s performance, Mohsin Naqvi said, "I have to answer the Prime Minister regarding my performance, and my only request to him is to have an independent third party evaluate the performance of all ministries and present the findings before the public so everyone knows which ministry is delivering results.” He further added, "I believe my attendance is around 70 percent.”
The Interior Minister also rejected the impression that his previous statement was aimed at criticizing the current government. He stated, "I stand by my statement that the system has collapsed, but I was referring to the 80-year-old system. I believe the system has been broken for the past 80 years because if it had functioned properly, the country would have been in a much better position today. I did not charge-sheet the government; I am part of the government myself, so I would not charge-sheet myself.”
Praise for Shehbaz Sharif
Praising Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Mohsin Naqvi said, "You have a Prime Minister who works 14 to 16 hours a day, and if these issues are fixed, the results will be a thousand times better.”
He further remarked, "Even under these circumstances, look at how much the FBR has increased revenue. We have won the war, our diplomatic standing has improved significantly, and many reforms have already been introduced. I still believe that if the Prime Minister had inherited a properly functioning system, he would have moved the country forward a hundred times faster.”
When asked about his relationship with the Prime Minister, Naqvi said, "Many people wish that my relationship with the Prime Minister would deteriorate, but that is not going to happen.” Responding to allegations made against him, he simply said, "May Allah keep them happy.”
