Islamabad: Police have launched an investigation into an alleged dispute, physical altercation and aerial firing involving students and a military officer holding the rank of lieutenant colonel at Sarhad University in Islamabad.
Police have entered the incident in the daily station diary, making it part of the official record. Officials said videos circulating on social media are also being reviewed to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
According to the federal police, the evidence will be examined before responsibility is determined and legal action is taken. Officials said the report could also be converted into a formal First Information Report (FIR) if required.
Military Officer Handed Over to Authorities
Police said the military officer involved in the incident was initially taken into protective custody and subsequently handed over to the relevant military authorities. Sources said the matter is also being examined at the military level and departmental action against the officer remains possible.
Initial information suggests that the dispute began with a disagreement between a university head of department and the military officer’s wife, who works as the university’s Human Resources director.
Harassment Complaint
According to police, the woman had submitted a complaint several days earlier against a university head of department, alleging harassment and threats. The matter was later settled between the parties, and after a written apology, the woman submitted a request to police asking that no further legal action be taken.
The university administration has formed an internal inquiry committee to investigate how the dispute, which had apparently been resolved, escalated again and how students became involved in the matter.
What Happened on the Day of the Incident?
On the day of the incident, students were protesting at the university. According to the administration, the military officer’s wife was also present at the campus. As the situation became tense, she called her husband to the university.
According to a university official, the officer was attempting to take his wife away when an argument reportedly broke out again after some students allegedly shouted remarks at them. A physical altercation followed, after which the officer was accused of firing shots into the air.
A university employee said the officer was carrying a stick and allegedly used it to hit some students. However, the videos circulating on social media have not been independently verified.
A further video related to the incident was also shared on social media, allegedly showing a woman taking a stick from a female police officer.

Students Stage Protest
Following the aerial firing, students left the university and blocked traffic on GT Road while protesting. Police officials reached the scene, held talks with the protesters and assured them that action would be taken against those responsible.
Islamabad Police said all available videos, statements and other evidence related to the incident are being examined. Legal action will be taken against those found responsible after the investigation is completed.
According to military sources, the senior military leadership has taken notice of the incident. They said action would be taken under the relevant rules if any violation of law or regulations is established.
The Sarhad University administration has also confirmed that it submitted a complaint regarding the incident to the relevant police station.
