Yemeni Houthi rebels have taken control of Bab al-Mandab after government forces reportedly withdrew from the central island of Perim, according to a news agency.
The development comes amid continued Houthi advances along Yemen’s coastal areas and growing concerns that the conflict could develop into a wider regional crisis.
Houthi Forces Seize Perim Island and Zubab Port
According to the news agency, Yemeni government forces withdrew from Perim Island, located at Bab al-Mandab. Following the withdrawal, Houthi forces took control of the island.
The Houthis also seized Zubab Port, described as an important port on the Bab al-Mandab waterway. Their advance along the coastal areas is reportedly continuing.
Yemeni Envoy Warns of Wider Regional Impact
Addressing an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Yemen, the Yemeni envoy warned that the ongoing fighting could worsen not only conditions inside Yemen but also affect Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region.
The warning comes as fighting and military advances continue in strategically important areas of Yemen.
Houthis Reportedly Advance Toward Mokha
According to Iranian media reports, Houthi fighters have captured important areas in Yemen’s western Taiz province, as well as the al-Khalid and Jabal al-Nasr military bases.
The reports further claim that Houthi advances have reached the entrances to Mokha Port, located along the Red Sea coast.
Iranian media also reported that the Houthis had taken control of Mokha Airport, while a large number of resisting elements were said to have surrendered.
Bab al-Mandab Remains a Major Global Maritime Route
Bab al-Mandab is considered one of the world’s most important maritime passages. A significant portion of global trade, including oil, gas and food commodities, passes through the waterway.
The Houthi advance toward Yemen’s coastal areas, continued attacks on Saudi Arabia and retaliatory airstrikes have increased concerns that the conflict could once again develop into a broader regional crisis.
The concerns are particularly significant as both Bab al-Mandab and the Strait of Hormuz are reportedly facing heightened tensions.
