Heavy rain in Rawalpindi has caused the water level in Nullah Lai to rise sharply, prompting the district administration to issue an evacuation alert.
For the safety of residents and students, all educational institutions within the limits of Rawalpindi City will remain closed today, September 1.
Nullah Lai has swollen amid the heavy rainfall, with reports of rainwater entering homes in parts of Rawalpindi. Emergency sirens were sounded in the city, while rescue teams were placed on alert. Heavy rain in the twin cities also left vehicles stranded on roads.
Water level crosses evacuation threshold
According to the administration, heavy rain is continuing in the catchment areas of Nullah Lai, raising concerns that the water level could rise further.
At Kattarian, the water level in Nullah Lai has already crossed the designated evacuation threshold of 20 feet. The increasing flow poses a risk to low-lying areas, including Gawalmandi.
Relevant departments have been directed to remain on high alert and take necessary evacuation and emergency measures in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
Educational institutions closed
The Rawalpindi district administration said all educational institutions within Rawalpindi City would remain closed today to protect students and residents.
Citizens have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the heavy rainfall. People should stay away from Nullah Lai, rainwater channels, low-lying areas and locations where water has accumulated. Parents have been urged to keep a close watch on children and prevent them from going near dangerous areas.
Traffic authorities issue safety guidelines
Islamabad and Rawalpindi are experiencing heavy rainfall, with water accumulating on roads and in low-lying areas, potentially disrupting traffic.
Authorities said heavy rain in the Nullah Lai catchment areas was expected to continue for another hour, which could push the water level higher.
Islamabad Traffic Police has advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
Drivers have also been advised to use fog lights, remain in their lanes, use indicators properly and wear seat belts. Motorcyclists have been instructed to use the extreme left lane and wear helmets at all times.
Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi has urged residents to prioritize their safety and that of their families and avoid leaving their homes without necessity. Citizens have also been advised to stay away from streams, drains and other waterlogged locations and avoid swimming or bathing in waterways.
