Andy Burnham is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the leader of the Labour Party. A former Mayor of Greater Manchester and one of Britain’s most experienced politicians, Burnham has been a prominent figure in UK politics for more than two decades. After being elected Labour leader in July 2026, he was appointed Prime Minister, pledging to strengthen public services, promote regional development, and deliver economic reforms across the United Kingdom.

From Journalism to Politics

He later moved into politics by joining the office of senior Labour politician Tessa Jowell as a researcher. That role marked the beginning of his political career and helped establish his reputation within the Labour Party.
Rising Through Parliament and the Cabinet
Burnham was first elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh in 2001. During his parliamentary career, he held several senior Cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Culture, Secretary of State for Health, and other key government roles.
He also contested the Labour Party leadership in 2010 and 2015, but was unsuccessful on both occasions.
Transforming Greater Manchester
In 2017, Burnham became the first directly elected Mayor of Greater Manchester. He won a second term with a commanding majority in 2021, strengthening his political influence in northern England.
As mayor, he introduced significant reforms to the region’s public transport system. His administration brought bus services back under public control and launched the Bee Network, an integrated transport system designed to improve connectivity across Greater Manchester.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Burnham became a nationally recognized figure after publicly challenging the UK government’s approach to lockdown restrictions and financial support for northern England.
His outspoken defense of local communities earned him the nickname "King of the North,” a title widely used by both the British media and the public. Throughout the pandemic, he consistently argued for greater investment and fairer treatment for northern regions.

Following recent political developments and a leadership transition within the Labour Party, Andy Burnham returned to Parliament and successfully secured the party leadership.
